largest city in the Western province after Colombo. Located at the lagoon-mouth , Negombo
is a major tourist destination with an old, large and thriving fishing industry.

Pinnawala, instantly reminds us about the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, although Pinnawala
is also a small town situated in the Sabaragamuwa province. Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is
an orphanage, nursery and captive breeding ground for wild Asian elephants, and this has the
largest herd of captive elephants in the world. There are elephants of different sizes mothers to
babies and elephant walking in a line one behind the other to Maha Oya River for their bath or
as a leisure walk is striking and pleasant to watch. Visitors also allowed to feed these elephants
at this orphanage.

Anuradhapura is one of the ancient capitals of Sri Lanka and it is popular for its well
preserved ruins of an ancient Sinhala civilization. The sacred city holds large number
of places to worship such as Buddhist temples and Buddha statues, although there are
also few Hindu temples. Sri Maha Bodhi, Ruwanweliseya, Jetavanaramaya,
Thuparamaya, Abhayagiri, Lovamahapaya, Mihintale and Kadireshan kovil are popular
ancient shrines of worship built by early kings. Wilpattu National Park that has the
enviable distinction of being the oldest and the largest national park in the country in
situated in the close proximity to Anuradhapura.

    • Mihinthale

Mihintale is a mountain peak near Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka. It is believed by Sri Lankans
to be the site of a meeting between the Buddhist monk Mahinda and
King Devanampiyatissa which inaugurated the presence of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. It is now a
pilgrimage site, and the site of several religious monuments and abandoned structures.
Approximately 12.5 km (7.8 mi) east of Anuradhapura, close to
the Anuradhapura – Trincomalee Road is situated the “Missaka Pabbata” which is 1,000 feet
(300 m) in height and is one of the peaks of a mountainous range.

Polonnaruwa is considered as the royal ancient capital of Sri Lanka or golden period of
ruling. This sacred city holds large number of places to worship such as Buddhist
temples and Buddha statues, although there are also few Hindu temples. Gal Vihara,
Polonnaruwa Vatadage, Hatadage, Nissanka Latha Mandapaya and Gal Potha are few
of the ancient monuments speak about the history and culture of the city. Polonnaruwa
always reminds of the Parakrama Samudra, one of the largest reservoirs with sunset
views built by the King Parâkramabâhu I to preserve rainfall for agriculture, is
definitely an amazing man-built architecture which still remains strong and useful for
the inhabitants of the city.

    • Medirigiriya temple

The Medirigiriya Watadageya in Sri Lanka was built on a rocky outcrop. It had a single
entrance facing north. The doorway was a huge carved stone frame built at the bottom of a
staircase. The frame measured 9.75 feet in height and 4.75 feet in breadth. The doorway was
followed by a climb of 27 stone steps to a large resting area. Four steps lead from the resting
area to the actual Stupa house. The Stupa House had a low stone wall, about a meter tall,
which ran around it. Seated against the wall facing the four cardinal directions were four
exquisite stone Buddha statues. There was a huge 33 feet-long sleeping Buddha in the Stupa
House. The Stupa reigned in the center.

    • Pidurangala Rock

brick and stone steps to reach the top which will unfold some of the best wildlife moments.
The ruins and the large Buddha statue and the monastery on the top will add the right dose of
historical moments to your journey. Because the place is one of the most ancient cave temples
in Sri Lanka.
Pidurangala Sri Lanka rock is located in Sigiriya and the mountain is only a few kilometres
away from famous Sigiriya Lion rock fortress.

    • Sigiriya

Sigiriya is an ancient rock fortress located near the Dambulla town in the Central
province of the island. It is also known as Sinha-giri or Lion Rock, a name reached due
to the shape of the rock that looks like a lion lying down. Entrance to the rock fortress
is through the lion’s paws and when climbed up the stairs, it takes you up to an ancient
wonderland. According to histories, the fortress was built during 5th century and has
been recognized as one of the listed heritage sites of UNESCO. The frescos painted by
the king, mirror wall, gardens on top of the rock, the pool in the garden complex are
picturesque.

Dambulla is also home to the largest rose quartz mountain in South Asia. Dambulla
Dedicated Economic Centre is a busy market with wholesale and retail traders and due to its location at a major junction, Dambulla is also the centre of vegetable distribution
in the country.

Kandy is an ancient city situated on a plateau surrounded by mountains. The warm and cool tangled climate gives you an opportunity to enjoy a refreshing change from the tropical heat of the rest of the island. The city is filled with scenic tea plantations and bio-diverse rainforests.
Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, Udawattakele Forest Reserve and Arthur’s Seat are the
picturesque greeneries with species of birds. The city’s heart is scenic Kandy Lake and Kandy is popular for sacred sites, including the Temple of the Tooth celebrated with the grand Esala
Perahera annual procession in the months of June/July. National Museum of Kandy, Kandy
